Meigetsuin Temple with its many facets
Meigetsuin is a temple of the Kenchoji sect of the Rinzai sect, located in Yamanouchi, Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The temple is famous for its beautiful hydrangeas and is also known as Hydrangea Temple.
In addition, the temple grounds are also planted with plum trees, cherry blossoms, and maple trees, etc., making it a temple where you can enjoy beautiful scenery all year round, and a zen garden (called Karesansui) is another attraction.
A fantastic view peeking through a window
Meigetsuin is also famous for the fantastic world peeking through the round window in the main hall. The breathtakingly beautiful view of Japan’s four seasons makes us feel lucky to be in Japan!
Historically, the temple dates back to the late Heian period (heian period: 794-1185) when Meigetsu-an was built as a memorial to the local warlord, Yamauchi Toshimichi.
It is about a 10-minute walk from JR Kitakamakura Station.
